Description
Will Smith is no stranger to working out. He’s been the sexy, lean, fast talking Police officer Mike Lowrey in Bad Boys, to a ripped cyborg who takes on a hoard of machines in ‘I Robot’ right up to a 200lbs + Muhammed Ali. Months prior to filming for I am Legend, Smith began a nutrition and fitness program that yielded a leaner, trimmer physique, one that has critics and fans raving about his new shape as much as the mogvie itself! Working with longtime physical fitness trainer Darrell Foster, who years earlier had transformed him for his Academy Award-nominated turn in "Ali," Smith dropped 20 pounds on a regimen every bit as strenuous as his Vampire-Battling characher’s own. Cites Foster, "We put him in desperate straits--high-altitude training for oxygen deprivation, heat, cold, humidity, low-caloric intake and many other adverse conditions. It helped him develop the mental aspects of his character as well as the physical." Smith was in his maintenance phase prior to principal photography, so Foster put Smith through his version of a survivalist camp:

Exercise
For starters Smith ran eight kilometres daily combined with a Sarcomere hypertrophy strength-training program. Sarcomere hypertrophy, maximally stimulated by the likes of Olympic weightlifers, results in significant increases in strength, unlike the sarcoplasmic variety, which is markedly increased by bodybuilding style training. The former, therefore, is of greater relevance to the weightlifter or any other athlete who needs functional hypertrophy for improving sporting performance, with the latter form offering minimal sporting benefits, unless sheer bulk is needed for superiority, as is often the case in bodybuilding posing and sumo wrestling. As far as the general structure of the workout goes, the demands placed on your body from strength training dictate long periods of rest. This means 2-3 minutes between sets and an entire week between successive workouts of the same body part. Reps should be in the 8 and under range:

Diet
Diet Wise Smith was on a strict high protein/low carb regimen with emphasis put on foods like asparagus that (the vegetable extracts water from the body to reveal muscle definition) and dandelion tea, a popular diuretic. Such foodstuff’s allowed Smith to reduce his body fat to just 6% and attain excelelnt muscle definition. Typically Chicken, fish, rice and pasta should provide the basis of the diet, with fruit and vegatables to accompany. it's imperative that you keep fully hydrated also as it's such an intense workout.

Problems
Hypertrophic strength training doesn’t grow muscle mass extensively, it relies on actually building strength rather than muscle so the muscles get more defined so don't expect quick results, (wmith was already in shape and it took him 4 months to get his tight bod). If you need to shed excess weight then you’ll take a long time to really show results but you’ll be feeling much healthier than every in no time at all.
